Our Speaker this week in the hall is Dave Bathard FRPS AWPF and his presentation is entitled “Mono Print Showcase”.

David became fascinated with photography almost thirty years ago, so he joined Frome Selwood Photographic Society. As a club photographer, David has embraced all that the photographic clubs have to offer and for most of that time has either been Program Secretary of the club or Chairman.

David has sort further inspiration by becoming a member of the Royal Photographic Society and by progressing through the Distinctions program, until he gained his Fellowship in Applied Photography. In 2015. Dave has also gained his Associate of the Welsh Photographic Federation.

New members are welcome to attend this talk. We meet at St Thomas’s Church Hall at 7:30.

The closing date for the first print competition (Flora and Fauna) is 3rd November. Please bring your mounted prints along on the 3rd Nov, or contact Rob Dyer (printsec@trowbridgecc.uk) to make alternative arrangements if you will not be attending the hall on the 3rd November.

This week is our first Projection Competition of the season with an Open subject. The images below were the Group A and Group B winners from last year.

Who will be the winners this time around? Join us in the hall (see map) to find out, and as always new members are welcome to come along. Our judge for this competition is Peter Crane ARPS.

Mac Chivers – Modern & Post-Modern Photography

There was a profound change in the photography in the early part of the 20th century which began in Paris then spread around the world. This has now been called the ‘Modern’ period. During this time many new genres had their beginnings and subsequently many others followed. Before this the only recognised artistic genre was ‘Pictorilism’. Looking at over a hundred images, Mac’s presentation examines the change point in some detail then moves on chronologically through more recent genres into the present.

Once again, the presentation will be in the hall with Mac ‘Zooming in’ from Bideford. Members who are unable to get to the hall can still join the Zoom meeting (details below). We managed to resolve some technical difficulties with the Zoom session last week, so using a much newer laptop the AV quality of the presentation should be much better and we may even be able to record the session if the presenter allows it.

This Thursday’s presentation is from Thomas Peck entitled The Photographic Sublime.

Photojournalist Thomas Peck (https://www.thomaspeckphotography.com) shows how the traditions of the Sublime influenced early landscape photographers through to the modern day. With examples from painters like Turner & Caspar David Friedrich & photos from Carleton E Watkins to M Kenna to S Salgado to A Adams to H Sugimoto, plus the author’s own pictures. A fascinating insight into a cultural trend which is sure to provoke some debate, especially when we look into the future at how photography and the Sublime might interact in the 21st century.

The presentation will be in the hall (see map), but the presenter will attend via Zoom projected using the club laptop and projector, members who are unable to get to the hall this week can still  join the zoom meeting (details below). This is the first time we have attempted this, but it has great potential for getting speakers like Thomas who would not normally be able to present to Trowbridge due to his remote location. As always, new members are welcome to come along.

This week’s presentation is by Justin Quinnell on the subject of Pin Hole and Camera Obscura Design.

Justin is considered a world expert in pinhole photography and camera obscuras which he has taught for over 28 years throughout the world. He lectures part time at Falmouth University and his work includes: ‘Mouthpiece’ – inter mouth images, ‘Slow Light’, 6 month exposures and ‘Awfullogrammes’. Next week’s presentation is from Stephen Davis, It’s entitled Photographing Trees of the Savernake Forest.

Stephen is Head of Conservation at Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, and  a highly accomplished photographer who will explain the equipment, techniques and setting he uses.

This week there will be a demonstration of how to mount images for print competitions and a chance for members to show examples of their work. Please bring along up to 5 of your favourite images, either in print format or digital images on a memory stick or SD card. Members can give a narrative to each of their images if they are happy to.

Trowbridge Camera Club is pleased to announce that we are photographers for Trowbridge Ladies Rugby Club this season.

We will be covering all of their home games and some cup and friendly matches.

Become a member of the Trowbridge Camera Club and get the chance to get into sports photography.

The first competition of the 2022/2023 season is going to be judged on 20^th October. The closing date for image submission will be the 6^th October.

The competition is “Open”. This means any genre of image can be entered – definitely not limited to landscape, street, wildlife, architecture but of course these are valid as well. Choose any subject you like, maybe something that doesn’t fit into any traditional genres, maybe something a little off-beat, no enhancement or manipulation of the image off-limits – aim to surprise, inspire or intrigue us and the judge.

As usual you can enter up 2 colour images and 2 mono images. Images to entered as jpg image files as per normal club competition rules. You will need to have paid your membership subscription fee to enter – see how to join.
