Meeting 18th April: Exploring Street, Landscape, and Colour Through Photography

This Thursday John Beeching with give us a presentation on Exploring Street, Landscape, and Colour Through Photography. John lives in Frome and is a former academic at the University of Bath. He has lived and travelled extensively across the globe, and his photographic journey is characterised by his dedication to capturing the essence of moments through his lens. His subjects are diverse, and he will present street scenes, landscapes, and the interplay of colour. John has a website https://johnbeeching.com/work.

John’s presentation is not a lecture but a conversation. He will share what inspired him in each shot and his techniques to capture it. By delving into the nuances of his photos, he will offer insights into what sparked his interest in each scene and the methods he employed to bring his vision to life. This interactive session is designed to engage you in his creative process.

John’s style may suit all, but his unscripted delivery approach offers a chance to learn first-hand about his creative process. The presentation promises to be an engaging session that will inform and inspire without any unnecessary frills.

Non-members are welcome to come along. We meet at St Thomas’s church hall at 7:30.

Meeting 11th April: Members evening – light painting photo session

This Thursday we have a members evening and we will be having a photo session. As we missed out on our “Experimental” competition we thought we would have this as the subject for the evening.

The topic will be light painting, so members should bring their cameras, tripods and cable shutter releases, as well as any portable items that light up and can be waved about in the dark. This could be torches, light strings, or even just your mobile phones. Different colours would be good for added interest. Use of a tripod is essential but if you don’t have one, some of us have spare tripods which we will bring along.

This is experimental and we will all be experimenting together. We have some experienced photographers in the club who will be able to assist with using your cameras in ‘Manual’ mode and the settings to use, so don’t be afraid that you don’t know which settings to use, how to work in ‘Manual’, or that your camera might not be good enough. We should all have some fun with this topic.

Here is a test shot that Kevin did in his living room with LEDs stuck to a broomstick and one shot taken on his camera, to give you an idea of what we will be doing.

Non-members are welcome to come along. We meet at St Thomas’s church hall at 7:30.

Meeting 4th April: Members critique evening

This Thursday will be a critique evening, an opportunity for members to have constructive feedback on their images by our fellow members. This is a new type of meeting for us so if successful we will be developing the format for future critique evenings.

Members should bring or send (chairman@trowbridgecc.uk)  up to 4 images for the group to consider. These can be prints brought on the night, or projection images sent by email or brought on a memory stick. Label the images with a 1, 2 3 or 4 at the beginning of the filename followed by the title and you our membership number. Example: 1 This is a Bird 193.jpg. If you don’t wish to be identified just put 000 as your membership number.   If you would like you can give a short intro to your images e.g. how why, where you took them. We will sort the images by number all the 1’s the 2’s etc, so we can do as many as possible and hopefully ensure that everyone will get at least 1 or 2 images shown.

The images can be of any subject, but as we have missed out on the competition for experimental photography, this would be the ideal opportunity to submit any you have already taken for this subject. The critique for will be given by 3 members chosen randomly from a group of those who wish to participate. Please let me know if you want to be included as critics. As a guide you will be looking to comment on content, composition, impact, photographic technique, artistic value.

Non-members are welcome to come along for up to 3 taster meetings before deciding whether to join or not. We meet at St Thomas’s church hall at 7:30.
